This TDLR-approved* workshop will feature 3 hours of ethics training and 5 hours of training in illegal drugs terminology and related information.TDLR-licensed court interpreters will receive 8 hours of CE credit, enabling them to fulfill their entire continuing education requirement for the year.

Code of Professional Conduct in Court Interpreting will cover the nine TDLR cannons of court interpreter ethics and explore the question "Should licensed interpreters at depositions be supervised and, if so, by whom?" There will be ample opportunity for Q & A throughout the course.

Illegal Drugs: Terminology and Other Useful Information will cover drug names, street names, classifications, ingestion methods, uses and effects of all illegal drugs available on the market today, from 2-CB to yaba, as well as the major cannabis, cocaine, heroin, opium, methamphetamine and tryptamine drugs.

The workshop is intended mainly for court interpreters licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) who are seeking to fulfill their TDLR continuing education requirement, but will also provide excellent training for interpreters preparing to take the TDLR licensing exam. The drugs terminology component will benefit not only interpreters but also parents who want to learn more about the drugs that their children may be exposed to in school and elsewhere.

This workshop will not be language-specific. The language of instruction will be English, with some vocabulary provided in Spanish.

Participants licensed by TDLR will earn 8 continuing education hours.

Participants certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) will earn 8 continuing education points.

About the presenters

M. Eta Trabing  has been a technical translator since 1956, first in Argentina, then in the US. She started as a conference and  court interpreter in 1968  and became a US federally certified court interpreter in 1980 and a state-certified court interpreter in 1995. She retired from interpreting in 2002, but continues to work as a translator, specializing in animal science and veterinary medicine and related agricultural areas; general medicine, public health, social services and mental health; insurance; legal contracts and criminal law; and waste management and environmental sciences. Her working languages are Spanish and English. She also speaks Portuguese, German, and French for social and travel purposes.

Ms. Trabing has been teaching interpretation and translation for almost three decades, and has been a guest speaker and trainer at numerous conferences and seminars throughout the U.S and abroad. She is an approved provider of continuing education courses for both the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and the American Translators Association. She has published a number of books on translation and interpretation, bilingual glossaries, and dictionaries, through Berkana Language Center, the company that she runs with her son, Alex.  Many of these books are being used by colleges and universities as text books in interpretation classes.

Alex Trabing is Ms. Trabing's son and her partner in Berkana Language Services. In his 20+ years of working for restaurants and for Sam’s Club, he has learned a great deal about drugs, how people abuse them, and how to tell who is using them. He is the primary creator of the drugs terminology course.
 
He manages all sales and marketing for Berkana Language Services, as well as printing and binding of Berkana’s books and CD-ROMs. He has also designed their covers, and is the voice on the simultaneous interpretation CDs.
